Organizations are facing an immediate reality: artificial intelligence has already redefined the cyber‑risk equation.

Generative AI tools are now routinely used to develop internal applications and automate processes—often without rigorous security review. At the same time, these very technologies are being exploited to design faster, more precise, and more scalable cyberattacks. AI is not an additional risk factor; it fundamentally alters the scale, speed, and nature of cyber risk. In this respect, it represents a threat of an entirely new order.

An Unprecedented Institutional Alignment: 2026 as a Pivotal Year

The year 2026 marks a clear inflection point. For the first time, leading international authorities are issuing simultaneous warnings about the central role of AI in the evolution of cyber risk. The World Economic Forum now ranks AI as the fastest‑growing cyber threat—ahead of ransomware.

In France, the Directorate‑General for Internal Security (DGSI) has recently alerted companies to the risks of economic interference associated with professional uses of artificial intelligence. Across both the United States and Europe, cybersecurity agencies are restructuring their roadmaps around the security of AI systems. This convergence is unprecedented. It reflects a shared assessment: the 2026–2027 timeframe represents a critical exposure window for organizations engaged in large‑scale digital transformation initiatives.

The Democratization of Hacking—and the Illusion of Capability

The first major rupture lies in accessibility. Generative models have reached an exceptional level of performance in code production. For experienced developers, the productivity gain is incremental. For non‑specialists, it is transformative.

This democratization is creating a “digital Gutenberg effect”: the ability to produce offensive cyber tools no longer requires deep technical expertise. Techniques to circumvent ethical guardrails can yield actionable scripts or instructions—even from general‑purpose models. Unrestricted open‑source models further amplify this phenomenon.

The UK National Cyber Security Centre anticipates that AI will fundamentally reshape the threat landscape by 2027, accelerating both offensive and defensive capabilities. Yet the most structurally significant risk lies elsewhere: in the intrinsic quality of AI‑generated code. AI optimizes syntax—not secure architecture. Without a solid grasp of core principles—dependency management, privilege segmentation, input validation, environment hardening—applications developed at speed become ideal attack surfaces.

At the heart of the issue is prompt engineering. Productivity gains disproportionately benefit non‑experts. Paradoxically, the pool of professionals truly capable of conducting deep, end‑to‑end system audits is shrinking.

A Technological Hall of Mirrors: When AI Attacks AI

We are entering an era in which AI is simultaneously weaponized for attack and mobilized for defense. Cybercriminals automate vulnerability discovery, while security teams deploy AI to identify and mitigate those same weaknesses.

This dynamic creates a hall‑of‑mirrors effect: automated code generation leads to new vulnerabilities; competing AI systems detect them; AI‑generated patches introduce further flaws. An almost infinite loop of code and counter‑code emerges. Human intervention increasingly resembles that of a digital Sisyphus—constantly repairing systems without ever achieving durable stabilization.

Reasserting Human Control in an Automated Environment

In the face of this trajectory, the response cannot be purely technological. It must be methodological and organizational. Cybersecurity must be embedded by design into AI initiatives from the outset. Equally critical is the preservation of deep technical expertise. Organizations must continue to invest in profiles capable of understanding underlying architectures and performing rigorous audits—not merely orchestrating automated tools.

The question is no longer whether AI will transform cybersecurity. That transformation is already underway. The strategic challenge now is whether organizations will retain sufficient human understanding and governance capacity to avoid becoming dependent on systems that ultimately operate beyond their control.
