Engaging SME Suppliers to Achieve Scope 3 Emission Reduction Goals
To meet Scope 3 reduction ambitions, our client needed small suppliers to measure their emissions and start their decarbonization journey. Together with EFESO, the client piloted a hands-on support factory for 18 SME suppliers, enabling data collection, Eco-Cockpit onboarding, and roadmap creation.
Our Client
A prominent technical services provider for buildings, plants and infrastructures managing a network of 18 SME suppliers across Germany.
“We are at risk of not being able to take along our long tail of small suppliers to achieve our Scope 3 ambitions
“
The Challenge
The client faced a critical bottleneck in advancing Scope 3 emissions reduction. While large suppliers could rely on platforms such as Ecovadis or IntegrityNext, smaller suppliers found these tools costly, complex, and beyond their capacity.
The company intended to use the free Eco-Cockpit tool to standardize Scope 1 and 2 GHG inventories across 18 SME suppliers in Germany. However, early validation showed that many SMEs:
- Lacked the capability to calculate Scope 1 and 2 emissions
- Had limited knowledge of GHG protocols or data requirements
- Were unsure how to apply the Eco-Cockpit tool
- Needed practical guidance and hands-on support to participate
The client required a structured, scalable support model to help SMEs generate emission baselines and define their reduction roadmaps—while ensuring progress toward its broader Scope 3 targets.
Real Results Achieved Together
Over six weeks, EFESO built and deployed a supplier engagement model that combined hands-on coaching, data quality control, and weekly alignment routines.

Our Approach
EFESO designed a pragmatic, high-touch engagement model tailored to SME supplier needs. The team conducted direct outreach to explain targets, tools, and expectations, ensuring each supplier understood how to collect and structure their data.
Using the client’s templates and the Eco-Cockpit tool, EFESO helped suppliers build reliable GHG baselines and initial roadmaps.
Weekly written reports and bi-weekly sponsor calls ensured transparency and rapid decision-making. A direct escalation channel enabled immediate resolution of non-cooperation or data issues.
Key success factors included:
- Hands-on support
- Content expertise
- Structured change management
- Consistent communication. Particularly with hesitant suppliers who required reassurance and coaching to adopt the sustainability objectives.
