"Reduce Program": Driving GHG Reduction to Achieve Climate Neutrality by 2050
OQ Chemicals, a global leader in oxo chemicals, set the bold ambition to become climate neutral by 2050. Together with EFESO, OQ Chemicals launched the “Reduce Program” to reshape its sustainability strategy, engage its plants worldwide, and start implementation of high-impact GHG reduction initiatives.
Our Client
OQ Chemicals is a global oxo chemicals producer with operations across Europe, the Americas, and Asia. The company manufactures a wide range of oxo intermediates and oxo derivatives used in coatings, lubricants, plastics, and numerous consumer and industrial applications.
“Our goal is clear: to become a climate-neutral company until mid of the century, meaning until 2050 - or even before
“
The Challenge
OQ Chemicals needed to transform an existing but underperforming GHG reduction approach into a structured, consistent, and actionable program. Several obstacles stood in the way:
- Lack of traction in the previous approach: Earlier GHG initiatives had not delivered the expected results, requiring a diagnosis of technical, organizational, and behavioral barriers.
- Ambition needing alignment: Leadership teams across regions needed a shared understanding of Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions and a unified ambition level for the new program.
- Governance gaps: A clear process for evaluating business cases, allocating projects, and integrating sustainability actions into the PMO did not exist.
- Cultural resistance: Some sites—particularly in the US—showed initial skepticism toward the new sustainability efforts.
The company required a structured methodology, shared vision, and coordinated roadmap capable of engaging leadership and operational teams across geographies.
Real Results Achieved Together
Within four months, this ongoing project has delivered a structured approach and a clear roadmap with defined and intermediate targets. Several initiatives have been launched and implementation started.
